SBA Veterans Advantage: what it actually is

It is not a loan. It is fee relief on SBA loans for veteran-owned businesses. Most explanations online get this wrong. Here is what it covers, who qualifies, roughly what it saves, and the actual steps to claim it.

BLUF

  • Not a loan product. It is a guaranty-fee reduction applied to standard SBA loans when the business is 51%+ veteran-owned.
  • You apply through a lender, not through SBA. Tell the lender you are veteran-owned so the relief gets applied.
  • Broad eligibility. Veterans, service-disabled veterans, active duty in TAP, reservists, National Guard, spouses, and certain surviving spouses all count toward the 51%.
  • SDVOSB certification is not required. Different program, different purpose.

The thing most people get wrong

Search results are full of pages describing "the SBA Veterans Advantage loan" as if it were its own product with its own application. It is not.

SBA Veterans Advantage is a fee benefit layered onto loans that already exist. You go to a bank or credit union, you apply for an SBA 7(a) or SBA Express loan like anyone else, and if your business passes the 51% veteran ownership test, SBA reduces or eliminates the guaranty fee. That is the entire mechanism.

This matters practically: there is no separate portal, no separate application, and no SBA office you call. Your lender does the work. If a lender seems unfamiliar with it, that is a signal to find a lender who does more SBA volume.

Who qualifies

The business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more of:

  • Honorably discharged veterans
  • Service-disabled veterans
  • Active-duty military participating in the Transition Assistance Program (TAP)
  • Reservists and National Guard members
  • Current spouses of any of the above
  • Widowed spouses of service members who died in service or from a service-connected disability

Note how broad that is. Active-duty members still in TAP qualify. Spouses qualify. This is a wider net than SDVOSB certification, which requires a service-connected disability rating and is used for a different purpose entirely.

On the dollar figures

SBA guaranty fee schedules are set per fiscal year and have changed repeatedly in recent years, including periods where fees were waived entirely for smaller loans. Any specific percentage you read online may be out of date. Get the current number from your lender or from sba.gov before you build it into your model. The structure of the benefit is stable; the exact percentages are not.

How to actually get it

  1. Get your documents together first. Business plan, 3 years of business tax returns (or projections if pre-revenue), personal tax returns, personal financial statement, debt schedule, and your DD-214.
  2. Work with a free counselor before you approach a lender. Your regional VBOC or an APEX Accelerator will review your package at no cost. Lenders decline weak packages, and a decline is harder to recover from than a delay.
  3. Pick a lender that does real SBA volume. Live Oak Bank, Huntington, and your regional SBA-preferred lenders close far more SBA loans than a generalist bank. Preferred Lender Program (PLP) status means they can approve without waiting on SBA.
  4. State the veteran ownership up front. Do not assume the lender will ask. Say it in the first conversation so the fee relief is priced into your term sheet correctly.
  5. Verify the fee on your closing documents. Confirm the guaranty fee line matches what you were told. Mistakes happen.

Veterans Advantage vs SDVOSB certification

These get confused constantly. They are unrelated.

FAQ

What is SBA Veterans Advantage?

SBA Veterans Advantage is a fee-relief benefit, not a separate loan product. It reduces or eliminates the SBA guaranty fee on certain SBA loans for businesses that are at least 51% owned and controlled by veterans, service-disabled veterans, active-duty service members in TAP, reservists, National Guard members, or their spouses and certain surviving spouses. You still apply for a standard SBA 7(a) or SBA Express loan through a participating lender.

How much does SBA Veterans Advantage save?

It depends on loan size and the current fiscal-year fee schedule set by SBA. The guaranty fee on a standard 7(a) loan generally runs from roughly 0.55% to 3.75% of the guaranteed portion depending on loan size and term. On a $350,000 loan that can be several thousand dollars. On SBA Express loans to veterans, the upfront guaranty fee has historically been reduced to zero for qualifying amounts. Fee schedules change every fiscal year, so confirm the current number with your lender before you assume a figure.

Is SBA Veterans Advantage a separate loan program?

No. This is the most common misunderstanding. There is no loan called a Veterans Advantage loan. You apply for a regular SBA 7(a), SBA Express, or other SBA loan through a bank or credit union, and if your business meets the veteran ownership test, the fee relief is applied. Your lender handles it.

Who qualifies as veteran-owned for SBA Veterans Advantage?

The business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more of: honorably discharged veterans, service-disabled veterans, active-duty military participating in the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), reservists, National Guard members, current spouses of any of the above, or a widowed spouse of a service member who died in service or from a service-connected disability.

Do I need SDVOSB or VOSB certification to get SBA Veterans Advantage?

No. SBA VetCert (SDVOSB/VOSB certification) is for federal contracting set-asides, a completely different purpose. Veterans Advantage fee relief runs off the 51% veteran ownership test at the lender level. You do not need to be certified through SBA VetCert to get the fee relief on a loan.

Where do I apply for SBA Veterans Advantage?

You do not apply to SBA directly. You apply for an SBA loan through a participating lender: a bank, credit union, or an SBA-preferred lender such as Live Oak Bank, Huntington, or your local institution. Tell the lender up front that your business is veteran-owned so the fee relief is applied correctly. A free VBOC or APEX Accelerator counselor can help you package the application before you approach a lender.

Can I use an SBA loan to buy an existing business as a veteran?

Yes. SBA 7(a) is commonly used for business acquisition, including entrepreneurship-through-acquisition (ETA) deals. Veteran ownership of the acquiring entity can qualify for the fee relief. This is a well-trodden path for veterans buying a retiring owner's business.

What can SBA 7(a) loan money be used for?

Working capital, equipment purchase, inventory, refinancing certain business debt, buying commercial real estate, and acquiring an existing business. Loans go up to $5 million. Terms are typically 10 years for working capital and equipment, up to 25 years for real estate.
